REAL ID deadline is May 7

Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers flying in the United States or visiting a secure federal facility will need a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, passport or another form of federally compliant identification. Travelers without a REAL ID-compliant form of identification should “expect additional screenings” that may lead to “delays and the possibility of not being allowed into the checkpoint”.

U.S. travelers are encouraged to get a REAL ID even if their license, permit or non-driver ID is not yet due for renewal.

REAL ID is acceptable for federal purposes in U.S.  and can be used as identification when returning to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. A passport is also acceptable as a REAL ID-compliant document.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has an online quiz to help travelers know whether their state-issued driver’s license is a standard ID or a REAL ID. In general, a REAL ID has a star in the upper right corner.

New Yorkers

New Yorkers can visit Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for specific office hours and to make a reservation.

The DMV has implemented several online tools, such as a document guide and an online application pre-screening process, to help New Yorkers prepare.

Before applying for your Real ID, you will need to gather the required documents some of which are listed below.
